Radio Shack sells an inexpensive contraption that allows you to plug a
tape recorder into the "circuit" between the phone and your handset. In
essence, you plug the tape recorder into the phone, and the handset into
the tape recorder. You can switch the tape recorder on and off without
interfering with the telephone conversation, and the contraption does
not affect the quality of the sound either on the tape or through the
handset. Linda Tripp found this contraption very useful.
However, be sure that you have a "regular" (analog?) phone. This
contraption works on my home phone but not on my office phone, since our
office phones have some kind of strange wiring.
