Dear Simon,
Your mention of Silone's treatment of Celestine V prompts me to
mention the way his earlier novels owe much to the tradition of
hagiography, as R.W.B. Lewis showed in his book 'The Picaresque Saint'.
It may be that rather than leaving no room for the novel the
tradition did something to add to its substance and attraction?
I look forward to reading your entry!
Yours,
Judy.
