THE WOODBRIDGE RESEARCH GRANTS - SPECIAL COMPETITION
The Physical Medicine Research Foundation (PMRF) invites investigators to
submit research proposals related to Whiplash-Associated Disorders.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the Woodbridge Grants and Awards Program is to seek
innovative, multidisciplinary research projects that could make a practical
contribution to the prevention, diagnosis and/or management of common
musculoskeletal problems. The focus for this special competition is limited
to Whiplash-Associated Disorders (WAD).
RESEARCH THEMES:
· WAD Diagnosis and Treatment - early intervention and long term
management, evaluation of diagnosis and treatment including pharmaceutical
and other medical interventions, physical therapies, manipulation,
treatment modalities, exercise and interdisciplinary approaches, prognosis
and predictors of long term outcomes, prevention of chronicity.
· WAD Insurance and Disability - community intervention, early
intervention, case management, disability adjudication, compensation,
cost/benefit analysis, return-to-work program.
· WAD Traffic Safety and Auto Engineering - crash prevention, traffic
safety and education, injury prevention/reduction, automobile safety and
design, crash dynamics and injury exposure.

The Physical Medicine Research Foundation is an international charity,
headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, dedicated to the prevention,
diagnosis and treatment of common musculoskeletal problems.
The Woodbridge Group is an international corporation manufacturing foam
components for automobiles and other uses, headquartered in Mississauga,
Ontario.
The State Farm Group operates in the United States and three provinces in
Canada. It is the largest writer of auto and home insurance and is among
the leading writers of personal life and health insurance. The parent
company is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, headquartered in
Bloomington, Illinois.
The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) is a provincial crown
corporation dedicated to helping B.C. motorists take the risk out of road
transportation. ICBC provides mandatory minimum vehicle liability insurance
and offers optional vehicle coverages, with premiums exceeding $2 billion
annually. ICBC also provides driver licensing.
GRANT APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Prepare a letter of intent outlining the
proposed project or research (2 - 3 pages) with the following information:
· Title and author(s) name, telephone, fax number, address for further
correspondence, Problem/question/hypothesis,
· Project/research design - e.g. descriptive, experimental,
quasi-experimental,
· Methods - e.g. subjects, instruments, data collection tools,
· Analysis - e.g. qualitative/quantitative statistical analysis,
· Results,
· Conclusions, outcomes e.g. decrease in injuries, decrease in claims, etc.
All letters of intent will be reviewed and applicants will be notified
within a few weeks whether or not to proceed to the full proposal stage.
SUBMISSION DATES: Letters of intent must reach the Physical Medicine
Research Foundation by August 28, 1998 (3 copies). Those applicants
selected to submit a final proposal must complete their application by
October 16, 1998. A detailed Grant Application and Guidelines will be
forwarded. Successful applicants will be notified by December 18, 1998 and
will be invited to submit their research design as a poster presentation to
the World Congress on Whiplash-Associated Disorders, February 7 - 11, 1999,
being held in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Winners will receive complimentary
registration to the congress.
GEOGRAPHIC SCOPE, LANGUAGE, GRANT RANGE: Applications will be accepted
world-wide in English. Multiple grants will be made. Several grants to
small projects will be made up to a maximum of $10,000 in Canadian funds
per project. Multiple grants for major projects with established research
teams will be made up to $75,000 in Canadian funds for each theme area. The
Woodbridge Grants Program encourages multiple funding sources for large
projects and will hold funds in trust to encourage participation of other
funders.
