 Netskills Workshop:
Authoring on the World Wide Web

9:30 - 4:30 Wednesday, 29th July 1998 Newcastle University

The World Wide Web (WWW) is becoming increasingly
pervasive in society, covering all aspects of
everyday life including commerce, leisure and
education. One of the key features of the WWW
is the ease with which individuals can publish
information, and the simplicity with which
sophisticated and exciting results can be
achieved in a short space of time.

This is a practical workshop for those who are
users of the World Wide Web and wish to start
creating their own Web pages.

It is suitable for researchers and academics from
any discipline, university administrators,
librarians and computing service staff.
 Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:

 * beginner's guide to Web authoring
 * creation of World Wide Web pages
 * use of graphics on Web pages
 * publishing documents on a Web server
 * use of Web authoring packages
 * converting existing documents for use on the Web
 *   validation of Web documents
 *   Web page design issues

By the end of the session participants will have...

 * written simple Web pages using HTML tags
 * included graphics in their Web pages
 * practised using hypertext to link to other pages
 * published Web pages on the Netskills Web server
 * seen examples of different Web design styles
 * had an opportunity to discuss design issues
 * included colours and background images in their Web pages

Participants will also have an opportunity
to:

 * produce Web pages with tables, incorporating different text
styles and images
 * develop frame based pages and demonstrate multiple page
content within the browser

Workshop Requirements:

Participants need no special technical skills; however
basic computer skills such as using a mouse and keyboard
are essential, and experience of using Microsoft Windows
to open and save files and open and close applications
e.g. a Word processor. Participants are expected to have
seen the World Wide Web and used a Web browser
such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.

The cost of the workshop is 75 pounds for participants from
higher education (Netskills is funded by the Higher Education
Funding Councils). Other participants should contact Netskills for
the relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
