Dear Italianists,
In a letter published in 1554, Giovambattista Giraldi Cintio argues that an entire nation,
"natione intiera" admires Ariosto's poem Orlando Furioso. I assume that by "natione" he
means Italy rather than, say, Ferrara. Can anyone tell me how "natione" is generally used in
the cinquecento? Does it usually mean all of Italy, or is it sometimes used for an individual
peninsular state? Am I right in reading a certain breadth into the term?
Thanks,
Zoe Anderson
