Mailbase UK, who provide the computer service that keeps Critical
Geography Forum operational, are under review from the JISC (Joint
Information Systems Committee) and require some assistance from
academic networks/ institutions in drawing up a case for continued
funding. Further details are given below.
Given that free access to email and internet in British Universities
may well be under threat, contributions on the value of the
Critical Geography Forum would be much appreciated by Mailbase, as in
the long term they will help to keep this a free service.

Subject: For moderation - Request for input to Mailbase "case"
From: Jill Foster <[log in to unmask]>
This is a request for "case studies" on the additional benefits to the UK
higher education community of the Mailbase Service.
JISC, the Higher Education Funding Bodies' Joint Information Systems
Committee, whilst recognising the value and importance of the Mailbase
Service to the UK HE community, wishes to reduce the level of central
top-sliced funding it provides to Mailbase. In preparing a case for
continued top-sliced funding of this infrastructural service, we would
value your input on how the use of Mailbase has helped your institution,
project or group save money. Examples would include:
- reduced travel and phone costs through use of Mailbase instead of face to
face meetings or telephone conferences
- being alerted early to possible frauds and thefts (e.g. the memory chip
thefts that hit some institutions a couple of years ago).
In addition to drawing up a strong case for continued central funding,
Mailbase is looking at possible methods of income generation to supplement
reduced funding. Such methods include "fee paying" lists. Lists which do
not satisfy the normal criteria for centrally funded Mailbase lists may now
be set up on a fee-paying basis provided that they have an educational
focus. Examples include lists for:
single UK HE institutions
See http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/docs/newlist.html for further details.
Mailbase is committed to providing the UK HE community with a high quality
and cost-effective discussion list service.
If you have some interesting facts for us on how Mailbase has saved your
institution, project or group money, we would be very happy to hear from
