Just to add to that last point of David Clarke's. I think that a
'garden' in the US (maybe Australia and NZ) is somewhere where you grow
food to eat. So they could have a garden in their 'yard' or not.
There's also the distinction (class/size?) between garden and gardens. I
also heard one of my colleagues refer to the space around his house as
"the grounds". Definately not a yard! Definately not on the same pay
scale as me.
I love gardening (mostly flowers) and if anyone can come up with a way I
could do more of it and call it work I'd be very pleased. Perhaps we can
invent a project...
