Forgive me, if this message might be redundant, but I haven't been able
to follow the discussions on Meta2 very closely in the past period in
general , and those on identifiers in particular.
So maybe this is not relevant at all.
Somebody pointed me to a publication on the Digital Object Identifier
(DOI) "launched" at the Frankfurt Bookfair last October.
The DOI will be assigned to individual articles (or to their components;
possibly even individual tables and equations) The DOI label adds to the
existing labels such as PII (Publisher Item Identifier), in that it will
be a label on an Internet page which will automatically resolve (or
point) to the URL where the item sits. The user need have no knowledge
of the item's location (URL).
DOIs will be assigned via an international DOI agency. The agency will
use the URN related Handle technology of the CNRI.
Elsevier Science announced that they are going to use DOIs for their
products.
