My name is Robert Hollands and I have just recently joined the
critical geography forum. I teach urban sociology and youth studies
in the Dept of Social Policy at Newcastle University, although my
background is in cultural studies (PhD at the Centre for Contemporary
Cultural Studies, University of Birmingham). My latest book has been
on youth cultures and the night-time economy ('Friday Night,
Saturday Night: Youth Cultural Identification in the Post-Industrial
City', University of Newcastle 1995), and I have recently submitted a
bid to the ESRC Youth Citizenship and Social Change Initiative to
look more closely at the phenomenon of the 'Chemical Generation' in
three U.K. cities. Unfortunately I support Newcastle United- although
Juventus is my favourite team on Champion Manager 97.
