I'm 2nd year physiotherapy student at Queen's University in Kingston,
Ontario who is greatly concerned with the quality of education in the field
of physical therapy. Because of the cut backs in Canadian medical care,
there is decreasing number of hospitals willing to take physiotherapy
students for clinical placements. Many hospitals are reducing their staff or
even closing some of the departments. My understanding is that issues
concerning students who desperately need clinical exposure to acquire their
practical skills have dropped to the bottom of the priority list. I'm
concerned specifically with clinical placements like neuro, cardioresp, ICU
which cannot be taken over by private clinics where 90% of case load is
related to orthopeadics. I was wandering if there is anyone
(physiotherapists, students, physicians, university profesors) who has any
suggestions and would like to share their opinion and/or experience
regarding clinical placement issue for physiotherapy students.
