Dear members,
as some of you may have noticed, George and I had to leave the list more or
less on auto-pilot during the last weeks. While George was temporarily
handicapped by his tender health, in my case it was an uncommon load of
problems and duties in the non-virtual world what forced me to interrupt my
networking activities for a while. Now that we are both half-way back into
our usual shoes, we will resume our duties as list-owners again on a more
regular basis and are ready to be contacted by you in all matters regarding
the management of this list.
We have had an impressive number of new subscriptions, and I would like to
encourage our new subscribers (and all others who have kept their silence
so far) to introduce themselves and their interests in teaching and
research to the list.
As a word to all our members: please help us to develop this list into a
useful forum for the distribution of informations regarding conventions,
publications, electronic resourses and other events, projects or resources
of specific interest for Italian Studies. If you are organizing a
convention or receive an announcement or a call for papers, please share
this information with us by sending it either directly to the list or to
the list-owners at the following address:

Similarly, if you learn about useful electronic resources or recent or
forthcoming printed publications or are about to publish yourself a work
which might be of interest for our list, please feel invited to distribute
the info (preferably with tables of content) on our list. In scholarly
matters, self-advertising is welcome and should be regarded as good style
as long it serves the rest of the scholarly comunity to organize its
knowledge and work. Also, if there is a job-opening in your department or
if you learn about one in another department of Italian, please send the
info to the list: we have quite a number of unemployed or inappropriately
employed scholars on this list, and your info might help to save a career.
Finally, as a word to those of our members who are students and do not yet
feel sufficiently advanced in their studies for joining or inciting
discussions actively: please feel free to submit your questions to our
community, and don't worry about the possibility that you might appear less
well informed than the better experts on this list. While it is true that
the list cannot be (and should not try to be) a substitute for the
classroom, it could nevertheless very well be a useful supplement to it.
With the best wishes to you all,
Otfried Lieberknecht
