Dear Scott:
Your message is really interesting and have enjoyed very much
reading it.
To tell the truth, I think relics are among the most fascinating
topics in the history of religions (remember that nearly every culture has
the same devotion for them as Christianism).
I just want to add that some medievals were as critic about this
phenomenon as some contemporary historians are; I cannot help remembering
the exhilarating tale of 'Frate Cipolla' and his absolutely false set of
relics in Decameron, VI, 10.
By the way, Giotto, who stars a couple of Decameron tales, was
victim of another misconception: the humble and very religious medieval artist.
