Isn't the bronze sculpture of St Peter with the toe worn smooth by pilgrims,
by Arnolfo da Cambio, who also created the marble statue of Carlo d'Angio,
Charles of Anjou, Saint Louis' unsaintly brother, garbing him in toga with
scroll of Constitution of podesta, upon a lion throne, in the Campidoglio,
as well being the architect of Poppi Castle, the Palazzo Vecchio and Santa
Maria del Fiore. The Florentines in this period were the Pope's bankers,
though often themselves under interdict.

And then God brought merrily to my mind David and other . . . Magdalen,
Peter and Paul, Thomas and Jude, how they are known in the Church on earth,
with their sins and it is to them no shame, but all is turned to worship.
