Hello everyone,
Thank you to all of those people who responded to my initial query
privately, and also to those who responded on the list.
I wanted to clarify for people that I do NOT intend to do a 'simple'
gender analysis. My work falls within a poststructuralist frame, and
does not conflate men and women with masculinity and femininity
(respectively). I am interested in the discursive production of gendered
subjectivities. I am also interested in the mutually contitutive
character of racialised, gendered, sexualised and classed subjectivities.
Thus, contrary to the concerns raised by a number of members of the list,
I will not be making 'generalisations' about gender based on simple
counts of those men and women who have and have not disclosed. Instead,
I am interested in how the process of disclosure opens certain spaces of
identity and closes off others. I am interested inthings like:
what kinds of subjectivities are open to us when we disclose?
what discourses ('race'. class, gnder, sexuality...) enable and contrain
specific subject positions? ...
I hope these comments respond to some of the concerns people have voiced.
If you have further concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me
privately or publicly on the list.
