To the Meta2-list
The day before we received Stuart Weibel's mail about NISO
standardization of the Dublin Core a meeting was held in Denmark for
librarians and others working with metadata.
One of our key issues was the lack of standardization of the DC. We need
a national Danish standard for metadata. On a national level we want to
support the DC, we have however a problem using a non standard as part
of the official standard.
Just after New Year a new legal deposit act came into force which
includes legal deposit for static Internet publications. At the legal deposit
registration of electronic material the use of metadata will be supported,
and standardizing the DC will facilitate the process.
This is why we absolutely support the idea of standardizing. A NISO
standard will make it possible to transform the DC to an ISO standard by
using an ISO fast track procedure.
Therefore, in Denmark we look forward to seeing the two first RFCs and to
the next step towards a Dublin Core international standard.
I further agree with Makx Dekkers' and Bill Moen's remarks about Z39.50
and the ZIG. It is a very good example of a formal standard, a formal
maintenance agency, and informal meetings as fora for further
developments.
Cheers
