PhD: Human Geography, Australian National University
I am a cultural geographer working as a postdoctural research fellow in
the Research Centre in Intercommunal Studies, University of Western
Sydney. My theoretical interests are in theories of subjectivity and
space, postcolonial theory and feminist theory/geography, with a
substantive focus on the Asian region (the Philippines, Hong Kong). This
year I will also begin research on Asian migrants in Australia, since it
is important to consider the status of Australian multiculturalism
since Pauline Hanson. I hope that 1998 will also see the publication of
my doctoral dissertation,"Cartographies of desire", which examines how
sex workers in the Philippines have been imagined as universal subjects
both in the Philippines (ie as symbolic of west/east relations) and
internationally (ie though HIV/AIDS education projects), and how the
individuals and groups involved in these discussions construct and
negotiate their identities.
Cheers, Lisa
