Peter,
what comes to my mind (depending on the time-span you're
interested in) is a dissertation written by Patrizia Bettella at Hopkins,
I believe; in it she deals w/ the "aesthetic" of ugliness in the
Renaissance. I'm sure Dissertation Abstract Internation or the MLA
bibliography will allow you to find the proper reference. Depending on how
you define ugly, too, you could also include Marino's poem on a black
slave that begins something like "Nera sei, si`, ma bella..." Good luck!
Buon lavoro!
