I am a Professor at the Arizona State University. I am writing you in hopes
that you will consider serving as an author of an article for an important
international project. This project is an opportunity to extend knowledge of
the sciences of complexity to a wide audience.

I have just undertaken the task of editing part of a very important global
project jointly sponsored by UNESCO and the Encyclopedia of Life Support
Systems (EOLSS). The UNESCO/EOLSS project is a massive international effort
that will result in an encyclopedic volume providing state of the art
knowledge across an array of topics related to sustainable development
(life support
systems).  Ilya Prigogine and 13 other Nobel Laureates serve on the advisory
board for this project. I hope you will explore the EOLSS web site for more

Prof. Doug Kiel from the University of Texas at Dallas is the editor of our
larger Theme section, entitled, Knowledge Management, Organizational
Intelligence and Learning, and Complexity. I have taken on the task of
editing the specific topical section entitled Agent-Based Genetic and
Emergent
Computational Models of Complex Systems.  This section will contain articles
on the following topics: Evolutionary Models of Cooperation and Competition,
Artificial Societies and Cultures, Genetic Algorithms, The Sugarscape Model of
Social and Cultural Behavior, ECHO and Agent-Based Ecological Systems Models,
Memetic Engineering and Cultural Evolution, and Exploratory Simulation and
Modeling of Complex Social Systems.

I am seeking 2 volunteers, to write articles on the topics:
--Artificial Societies and Cultures
--The Sugarscape Model of Social and Cultural Behavior

The article would be a general review of the state of the art.
The article should range from 5,,000-10,000 words. Authors ar
remunerated at the rate of $30 per 1,000 words. First drafts of papers
should be submitted
between late February and mid March, 1999.
