Dear Colleagues -

We have recently published three volumes on borders issues in Europe
which are available from the International Social Sciences Institute
(see my address below).

Schengen and EU Enlargement (1997) is #6 (including p&p)
Borders and Borderlands in Europe
and
Schengen and the Southern Frontier of the European Union
are #10 respectively (including p&p)

Here's a short description & the contents pages:

Eberhard Bort (ed) Borders & Borderlands in Europe, Edinburgh: ISSI 1998
(ISBN 0 9525469 6 5)

Schengen and EU enlargement, European integration and the perspective of
a European Union covering increasing parts of the whole continent -
those are some of the processes which are creating a new, post-Cold War
political map of Europe and, by doing so, have reintroduced the issue of
frontiers into the political and critical debate.
The end of the bipolar Cold War system has created new frontiers in
East-Central Europe - from the violent dis-integration of Yugoslavia to
the re-constitution of the Baltic states.
Despite the rhetoric of a 'border-free Europe', frontiers in Europe
seem far from vanishing, or from being abolished. But their status is
changing. The division between international and sub-state frontiers
within the Union seems to get increasingly blurred.
Frontiers as cultural markers seem to gain salience. In terms of
security, the concept of border zones, or of the 'frontier' in the
American sense, seems to replace the borderline approach.
This publication has its origin in an MSc course at Edinburgh
University on 'The Politics of Frontiers, Boundaries and Regions'. There
is no attempt at comprehensiveness in this little Euro-pean tour
d'horizon. But even an eclectic presentation of borders and borderlands
in a changing Europe may help to illuminate the discourse on the
subject.
