Some extra information regarding standards for real, double
precision numbers in computing (IEEE 754).
There is a paper by W Kahan at http://HTTP.CS.Berkeley.EDU/~wkahan/
which tells the IEEE754 story and also has a lecture note on the
topic.
There is also a longish article by David Goldberg:
"What every Computer Scientist should know about know about floating-point arithmetic"
in ACM Computing Surveys, vol 23, pp 5-48 (March 1991)
which might be of interest.
