Here is an update on six PhD studentships in the Department of Applied
Statistics, University of Reading, to commence 1 October 1998. Contact
details for further information on any of the projects is given below.
1 & 2/ Two University Studentships are available to support any of a range
of topics offered by members of the department, many of which lie in the
following areas:
Design of experiments
Environmental statistics
Medical statistics
Statistical genetics
The awards, for three years commencing in October 1998, provide for
tuition fees at the level applicable for EU citizens, as well as a stipend
of approximately 5,600 pounds p.a. and research and travel expenses of up
to 500 pounds p.a.
Successful candidates will be expected to apply also for alternative
sources of funding, such as the EPSRC. The advantage of the studentships
is that funding will be guaranteed in advance of the outcome of any
alternative application.
3/ Joint Lawes Trust/Reading University PhD Studentship.
PROJECT: Statistical issues in the design of environmental studies.
SUPERVISORS: Dr Steve Gilmour and Dr Moira Mugglestone (IACR Rothamsted)
The purpose of this project is to develop new statistical methodology
for the design of spatio-temporal sampling schemes for studying
environmental processes. The main thrust will be the development of
sequential designs, i.e. designs that evolve during the course of a
study as the understanding of the underlying processes improves. The
project will address aspects of design that are motivated by case
studies from recent and ongoing research in IACR. The student will
participate in the design of new studies that begin during the
lifetime of the project.
This project is one of five shortlisted projects, two of which will be
funded, depending on the quality of applicants. The student will be
based at Reading and will spend periods of study at Rothamsted.
4/ We expect to have available the following studentship, (funding subject
to final confirmation).
PROJECT: Robust Product Design and Prediction for Post-Harvest Pot Plant
Quality and Longevity
SUPERVISORS: Dr Steven Gilmour (Reading)
Mr Rodney Edmondson (HRI)
This studentship is part of a LINK project involving Horticulture Research
International (HRI) and The University of Reading, and funded by MAFF, the
Horticultural Development Council, Hansatech Instruments Ltd, Safeway
Stores plc, J Sainsbury plc and Double H House Plants. The student will
be based mainly in Reading, but will visit HRI sites in Warwickshire and
Hampshire.
5/ BBSRC CASE PH.D. STUDENTSHIP in collaboration with SMITHKLINE BEECHAM
PHARMACEUTICALS, HARLOW.
PROJECT: Statistical Methods for the Analysis of Protein Structure.
SUPERVISORS: Professor David Balding (Reading) & Dr Mike Tennant (Harlow)
This post is expected to be filled shortly. Any further potential
applicants should contact Professor Balding without delay.
