SHORT COURSE
ECONOMIC EVALUATION IN HEALTH CARE
MAY 12TH-14TH 1998
LOCATION. Missenden Abbey Management Centre, Buckinghamshire
CONTENT. This is the 7th course to be run by Brunel University's Health Economics
Research Group (HERG) on economic evaluation in health care. This introductory
course will cover six main areas:
* Alternative types of economic evaluation
* Costing in the NHS
* Outcome measurement for economic evaluation
* Data sources: trials versus models
* The use of league tables in economic evaluation
* Dealing with uncertainty
* Designing an economic evaluation
COURSE FACULTY. The course faculty will consist of the following people from HERG:

COURSE METHODS. These will include presentations, syndicate group exercises, group
discussions, a video and interactive computer software. Participants will be encouraged to bring
projects from their own areas of work to contribute to the study design exercises.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The course is intended for a wide range of people working in the
health care industry who need to understand the methods and results of economic evaluation.
Previous course participants have included: from the NHS, purchasers, pharmaceutical advisors,
R & D managers, clinicians involved with research and pharmacists; a range of professionals
from the pharmaceutical and medical device industries have also attended. No previous
experience in health economics is required.
COST. Including two nights accommodation and all meals, as well as the three day course:
Public sector: 645 pounds sterling
Commercial sector: 995 pounds sterling
Two NHS Executive regional offices (R&D Divisions) have agreed to support the course
financially through assisted places. For appropriate professionals working within the boundaries
of Anglia and Oxford and Trent regions, a limited number of places are available at 50% of the
above public sector price. Applicants from South Thames region can apply the regions' training
bursary scheme for funding.
