I can't help you with the 911 methodology, but there are problems with using
whole blood thiamine as a marker of thiamine status, in that the levels are
more affected by recent dietary intake. The functional assay is better, but
still has some drawbacks, mainly with the problem of measuring a small
decrease in absorbance against a high initial absorbance, and also the problem
of ensuring that the reaction is linear when measured.
