Toward More Comprehensive Web Searching: Single Searching Versus
Megasearching

     Brief discussion of what constitutes a digital library, the effects of

Book and Serial Vendors for Africa and the Middle East: Results of a Survey
of ARL Libraries
     Report of a study to compile a directory of book and serial vendors in
     Africa and the Middle East gathered by sending questionnaires to
     member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries. The
     directories themselves can be browsed by country and include an
     appendix of general vendors for the area.

RDF Tools
     Briefing document about RDF produced for the eLib / UKOLN seminar on
     RDF held in May 1998. Includes illustrations and links to more
     detailed information. RDF was developed following work on various
     metadata areas, such as content filtering (PICS), resource discovery
     (Dublin Core), digital signatures (DSig) and site mapping (MCF and Web
     Collections). RDF provides a generic framework which could be used to
     implement these, and various other applications.
Digital Collections: A Strategic Policy Framework for Creating and
Preserving Digital Resources
     Addresses the critical issue of developing a strategic policy
     framework for the creation and long-term preservation of digital
     resources. Includes six case studies which demonstrate how issues
     identified in the framework have been addressed by organisations in
     different business environments. Makes recommendations in the areas of
     long-term digital preservation, standards, on the framework itself and
     for further work. Aimed at those involved in the creation, management,
     and use of digital resources.
Book Aid International
     Charity founded in 1954 by Hermione, Countess of Ranfurly as a
     response to a book shortage in the Bahamas. Now works in partnership
     with organisations in developing countries to support their work in
     literacy, education, training and publishing by providing books and
     other reading materials.

Bioethics: Journal of the International Association of Bioethics
     Bioethics provides a forum for articles on the ethical questions
     raised by current issues such as: abortion, euthanasia, AIDS, in vitro
     fertilisation, genetic engineering, and experimentation on embryos.
     These questions are considered on the basis of concrete ethical, legal
     and policy problems, or in terms of the fundamental concepts,
     principles and theories used in discussions of such problems.

     Official UK Government website for the euro. Contains information for
     UK businesses preparing for the advent of the euro in 1999.
German Law Archive
     Dedicated to publishing cases, statutes, literature and bibliographies
     on German law in the English
Bracton on the Laws and Customs of England
     Originally entitled De Legibus Et Consuetudinibus Angliæ. Henry of
     Bratton was a thirteenth century English judge and is best known for
     this work which attempts to describe rationally the whole of English
     law. The work is remarkable both for its wealth of detail and for its
     attempts to make sense out of English law largely in terms of the 'ius
     commune', the combination of Roman and canon law that was taught in
     the universities in Bracton's time. The framed version allows
     simultaneous viewing of the English and Latin texts.
Plan Ahead
     US based association focusing on the promotion, advancement, and
     application of effective planning in higher education. Includes tables
     of contents of the journal "Planning for Higher Education".

Ethics Center for Engineering and Science
     Provides engineers, scientists and science and engineering students
     with resources useful for understanding and addressing ethically
     significant problems that arise in their work life. Accessible via
     organisational and keyword indexes and also includes engineering
     ethics cases, ethics in a corporate setting and essays.
This Dynamic Planet
     Map showing the Earth's physiographic features, the current movements
     of its major tectonic plates, and the locations of its volcanoes,
     earthquakes, and impact craters. The use of colour and shaded relief
     helps the reader to identify significant features of the land surface
     and the ocean floor. Over 1,500 volcanoes active during the past
     10,000 years are plotted on the map in four age categories. The
     locations (epicenters) of over 24,000 earthquakes, largely from 1960
     through 1990, are plotted in three magnitude categories and in two
     depth ranges. The document is in PDF format and requires Acrobat
     Reader 3.0 to view and print.

Division M: Bacteriophage
     Bacteriophages are viruses whose hosts are bacterial cells, they are
     metabolically inert in their extracellular form and they reproduce by
     insinuating themselves into the metabolism of the host. Includes
     phages indexed by family, as defined by genome type and virion
     morphology, resources for teachers and a brief history of
     bacteriophage research.
Integrated Taxonomic Information System
     Partnership of U.S., Canadian, and Mexican agencies, other
     organizations, and taxonomic specialists cooperating on the
     development of an on-line list of biological names focusing on the
     biota of North America. Includes data from the U.S. Geological
     Survey's Vertebrate Checklist, National Oceanographic Data Center's
     Taxonomic Code and the PLANTS database from the Natural Resources
     Conservation Service (NRCS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
     Possible to query the database, generate reports and download data.

Arthur: ART Media and Text HUb and Retrieval System
     Demonstration project using the AMORE image system to index and search
     the images and text of nearly 600 selected websites organized into
     five databases. Images can be retrieved by image similarity, or by
     keywords in the Web pages.
Investigating the Renaissance: Examining Material Aspects of Three Early
Netherlandish Paintings Using Digital Imaging Techniques.
     Computer-assisted imaging can reveal aspects of the process of making
     art not visible to the unaided eye. It also reveals the alterations of
     intervening centuries, alterations that were intended to repair the
     ravages of time and use, and to adjust images to reflect changing
     aesthetic preferences. Using "Portrait of a Man", Master of the 1540s;
     "The Virgin and Child", Workshop of Dirck Bouts and "The Last
     Judgement" by Jan Provoost the resource examines the techniques of
     infrared reflectography, X-radiography and ultraviolet light.
