004 Computing and the Internet

Computer Science Journals
     An index of tables of contents for over 200 computer science journals.
     Users can browse the latest available tables of contents, search each
     journal individually or search across all journals. Search options
     include title, author and keywords; searches can be limited by
     publication year, journal title, and volume number.
Usable Web: Guide to Web Usability Resources
     A collection of links and information about human factors, user
     interface issues, and usable design specific to the World Wide Web,
     such as access, animation, design, speed, navigation, multimedia,
     searching, applets, frames and style sheets.
Wotsit's File Format Collection
     An extensive collection of file format specifications, including JPEG
     image files, wave sound files, Rich Text files, and common database
     and word processing files such as Paradox and WordPerfect. All of the
     specifications are very technical and are directed towards
     programmers. Users can subscribe to a mailing list for notification of
     updates.
Exploring Windows NT
     Offers tips and techniques for Microsoft Windows NT professionals,
     with source code listings, sample files and featured articles on
     topics such as NTFS and use of the command prompt in Windows NT 4.

BookWhere Searchable Databases
     List of hundreds of library catalogues and other information databases
     that can be searched using the Z39.50 protocol using BookWhere
     software, which has a pre-configured list of available hosts and
     databases. Includes a virtual demonstration of the software.
AcqWeb's International Directory of E-mail Addresses of Publishers, Vendors
and Related Professional Associations
     Directory of over 3000 entries maintained for the benefit of the
     library community, in particular, acquisitions, serials and collection
     development librarians. The aim is to provide a register of email
     addresses for communication with publishers, vendors and associate
     resources. Addresses for general enquires, ordering and requesting
     sample issues are included as well as direct links to WWW on-line
     enquiry and ordering forms.
IMS Metadata
     Details of the Instructional Management Systems Project (IMS) which is
     developing a specification and software for managing online learning
     resources in order to assist effective discovery and management of
     educational materials, including intellectual property rights,
     commerce, and customisation of learning experiences.
European Commission Library Catalogue
     A catalogue containing over 172,000 catalogued records from the
     European Commission Library. Information is retrieved by basic or
     advanced searches and by language or document type. Searches can be
     conducted in English and French. Records include journal articles,
     books, conference proceedings and Internet resources (mostly
     documents). The service is free but registration is required.
Cydfenthyca Cymru - Interlending Wales
     Joint venture of the library and information community in Wales
     providing a centre for document supply. Co-operative project between
     unitary authorities, higher and further education institutions,
     specialist libraries and associates.

Revealing Things
     An exhibition of common, everyday objects to tell stories about
     people, their cultures and the meanings they associate with their
     possessions. Items discussed, organised by theme, era and object,
     include a 1937 chemistry set, a Vietnam memorial offering, a duckpin
     bowling ball, an early TV and a celery vase, among many others.
Hobsons Publishing
     Educational publisher. Also includes a subject-based index and careers
     resources.

     Quarterly journal discussing new statistical techniques and approaches
     to qualitative data offered by advances in IT, and the theoretical and
     ethical problems associated with these developments.
Y? The National Forum on People's Differences
     A moderated and edited mailing list where it is possible to ask people
     from other ethnic or cultural backgrounds questions on sensitive
     topics. Topics include those related to differences in age, class,
     disability, gender, geography, occupation, race and ethnicity,
     religion, or sexual orientation.
Celebrating Women's History Resource Centre
     Information about important events and women in the history of the
     Women's Rights Movement. Includes over 60 brief biographies of women,
     timeline, quiz, activities and court cases fought on women's rights
     issues.
Gender Inn: Women's and Gender Studies Database
     Gender Inn is a database of over 5000 records about feminist theory,
     feminist literary criticism and gender studies from 1950 to the
     present. Search results are returned in German and English.
AsianDOC: Asian Database Online Community Electronic Newsletter
     The goal of this newsletter is to support, and promote communication
     among, scholars, librarians and researchers who are developing text
     and image databases in the various fields of Asian and Eurasian
     Studies. Includes information on database projects and other Web
     initiatives, conferences and meetings, technical issues, print and Web
     resource reviews, and several interest group columns.
Glossary of Business Terms
     Concise description of hundreds of terms used in business and finance.
Finance Area Stock Exchanges
     Links to over 80 stock exchanges in countries all over the world.
Biodiversity and Conservation
     This hypertext book deals with the problems of trying to preserve
     biological diversity on the Earth. Topics include the history of life,
     depletion and extinction from over-exploitation, exotic introductions,
     deforestation, illustrations, charts and a bibliography.
Comparative Environmental Studies: The Cultural and Political Ecology of
Marginal Environments
     An extensive bibliography designed for students of an environmental
     studies course. The list is organised by the topics discussed each
     week in the course and includes comparing marginal environments,
     ecology, cultural ecology and rethinking environmental histories.
Energy Files
     An index of over 100 sites of scientific and technical energy related
     information. Includes databases, pre-print and technical report

ENTERWeb: The Enterprise Development Website
     An annotated list of resources on a range of enterprise development
     topics for enterprise development practitioners, policy makers,
     academics, students and small business owners. Sites are listed in
     over 20 topical categories including entrepreneurship, management and
     women and are available geographically or via an alphabetical index.
Food Safety: Organisms of Concern
     Set of documents about food safety and the organisms that can cause
     food borne illness. Includes facts sheets on bacteria, parasites,
     viruses and natural toxins, where they are found, how they are
     transmitted, symptoms of disease and advice on how to control the
     organism to prevent food diseases.
Trade and Environment Database
     A collection of over 450 trade and environment case studies organised
     by region or date. Studies include Mexican deforestation in the Sierra
     Madre, Haiti sanctions, the role of trade in transmitting the Black
     Death and UK nuclear fuel reprocessing.
Technorealism
     Description of the main principles of technorealism, including the
     view that information is not knowledge and that the Internet provides
     a range of new opportunities for people, communities, businesses, and
     government that may be empowering or enlightening, yet also dimensions
     that are malicious, perverse, or ordinary.
Business Information and the Internet
     Links to useful business web sites which should be of interest to
     business people working in small firms in the UK. Because of the
     nature of this project it has a bias towards Glasgow and London.
Information Economy
     Numerous links to resources about the economics of the Internet,
     information goods, intellectual property and related issues such as
     security, privacy and cryptography.
MyMail
     Service which provides users with a free electronic mail address via
     an account which enables users to send and receive email through the
     Web on Entranet's own Internet server.
Radio Joint Audience Research Limited
     Company established to operate a single audience measurement system
     for the radio industry: the BBC, UK licensed and other commercial
     stations. Offers online quarterly summaries of radio listening in the
     UK, covering national and local stations, with details of data
     collection methods.

Electronic Journal of Science Education
     Online journal devoted to the timely sharing of science education
     information via the Web. Topics covered include the science
     curriculum, teacher preparation, science education research, and
     implementation of science curricula.
The Last Word
     An archive of over 350 questions from readers of the New Scientist
     magazine, with answers submitted by readers. There are nine categories
     of question, including plants and animals, around the house, gadgets
     and inventions, and the physical world.
John Muir Exhibit
     Information on the father of modern conservation and founder of the
     Sierra Club, John Muir. Includes a list of Muir's publications,
     quotes, study guides, information on historic sites, songs and music
     related and dedicated to Muir and an annotated bibliography.
International Ultraviolet Explorer Archive
     A collection of over 107,000 spectral images, including ultraviolet
     observations of every kind of object from planets to quasars over the
     years 1978 to 1996. Data may be obtained from the catalogue by file
     transfer.
Asteroid and Comet Impact Hazards
     Information about the possibility and effects of a comet or asteroid
     hitting the Earth. Includes news, press releases, a bibliography,
     images and list of future close passages of near Earth objects.
Asteroids and Comets
     A collection of images of asteroids and comets. Includes Comet
     Hale-Bopp, images from the Hubble Telescope and Asteroid 243 Ida with
     a moon taken by the Galileo spacecraft.
Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous
     Information about the mission to orbit an asteroid. Includes news,
     education, science teams, science data centre, mission design, mission
     operations, star charts and near-Earth objects.
Near Earth Asteroid Tracking
     Images and data of the tracking of near Earth asteroids, including

Minor Planet Centre
     Information about the observation and tracking of asteroids and

Contributions of 20th Century Women to Physics
     An archive of information about more than 50 twentieth century women
     physicists who have made original and important contributions to
     physics. Details about important contributions, publications, honours,
     employment history, and references are provided for each woman
     included in the database.
Learn Physics Today
     A collection of interactive lessons in physics aimed at secondary
     school level students. Includes basic skills, mechanics, lights and
     waves, electricity and a quiz.
Nuclear Science References WWW Retrieval System
     A bibliography of citations and keyword abstracts for publications in
     low and intermediate energy nuclear physics research from 1910 to the
     present. The entries are indexed by author, nuclide, reaction,
     particle and subject.
Organometallic Research Centres in Europe
     An index of European organometallic chemists and their fields of
     research arranged by country.
Tracking El Nino
     Information about the causes and tracking of the El Nino weather
     pattern. Includes news, images, origins of El Nino, the global weather
     machine, anatomy of El Nino and the effects on global weather.
Dictionary of Ecological Epidemiology
     Cross referenced definitions of hundreds of plant epidemiology terms
     from acquired immunity to zoonosis. Includes some terms from
     immunology and classical epidemiology, but the chief perspective is
     that of ecological epidemiology.
Conservation Ecology
     Peer-reviewed scientific journal from the Ecological Society of
     America. Topics include conservation of ecosystems, landscapes,

National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis
     Information about identifying major ecological patterns and

     thinkers.
Microbiology Network
     Information and resources for microbiology and biotechnology
     professionals. Includes lists of user groups, mailing lists, programs,
     free databases and newsletters.
Saccharomyces Genome Database
     SGD is a scientific database of the molecular biology and genetics of
     the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is commonly known as baker's
     or budding yeast. Includes sequence analysis and tools, graphical
     views of yeast chromosomes, guide to yeast references and gene
     registry.
Angiosperm DNA C-Values Database
     A database of DNA C-values. Access to this database is free but the
     user must provide an email address as well as the genus of interest.
     Search results include taxon, family, 4C DNA amount, entry number and
     reference citation, listed separately for each species.
3-D Insects
     A collection of three dimensional images of insects. Includes beetle,
     ant, mantis, flea, and wasp. Each section contains several pointers to
     relevant information about the insect. VRML and QuickTime movie format
     is used.
Cetacean Research Unit Whale Information Center
     Information on whale research, education, and conservation, with an
     emphasis on the north-east United States, but also more general
     information about the distribution, life history, diet, social
     organisation and population status of several whale and dolphin
     species.

Virtual Embryo
     An index of information about developmental biology. Includes full
     text journals, research resources, education resources and a
     developmental biology tutorial.
Guidelines for the Treatment of Sexually Transmitted Disease
     Guidelines published by the US Centers for Disease Control on the
     treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Included are sections on
     various sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, genital ulcers,
     epididymitis, human papillomavirus infection and vaccine preventable
     STDs.
Finite Element Modelling Continuous Improvement Book
     Explains and demonstrates different finite element modelling and
     analysis techniques, including frequency response-vibration and modal
     weight calculations.
Challenge of Materials
     An online gallery of information and graphics of common materials
     based on an exhibit at the Science Museum in London. Includes
     materials which have had a significant impact on civilisation, atomic

Computer 50
     Information about the first stored-program electronic digital

     Body set up for the protection and promotion of public monuments and
     sculpture. Includes within its interest any sculptural or
     commemorative feature in the urban or rural landscape. Includes
     details of a National Recording Project which will catalogue every
     piece of public sculpture and every public monument in the British
     Isles and maintain this information in digital form for public access.
Musical Stages Online
     British magazine about musical theatre. Includes complete listings of
     all musicals currently playing in London, a guide to regional musicals
