You may be interested to know about a new book that has just been
published by Bowker-Saur, as part of the British Library Research
series.
The Role of the Library in Distance Learning (A Study of Postgraduate
Students, Course Providers and Librarians in the UK) - presents the
findings of five studies undertaken between 1994 and 1996 that looked
at the role of libraries in supporting students. In particular, the
research looked at the experiences of distance learning students with
regard to library use and the arrangements made by course providers
for library use.
Over the last 10 years the number of distance learning programmes
offered by universities in the UK has increased significantly in
number. This has allowed students to study in their own time and at
their own pace, while also relating their programme of study to their
specific work interest or professional development. The trend has also
raised a new challenge for university libraries to provide student
support.
The book makes recommendations based on the study findings and also
reviews the literature from the UK, North America and Australia. It
should be essential reading for course providers within any univeristy
supporting this growing segment of the student population.
