Does the college library make any real difference to teaching and
learning?
This and many other questions were addressed in the Effective College
Library Research Project. The findings & implications of this research
for FE college libraries will be revealed and discussed in a NEW
workshop from The Library Association:
'The Really Effective College Library? supporting teaching &
learning through libraries and learning resource centres' 18th June,
London
The research has identified a number of key models of effective college
library support for teaching & learning. Come along on the day and find
out which are most effective in helping your service to develop and
respond to changing demands.
There are only 24 places available. Please call Professional Development
at The Library Association today on 0171 636 7543 ext.288/9 to reserve
your place or return the booking form below to CONFIRM your place.
PROGRAMME
The really effective college library?
Supporting teaching and learning through libraries and learning resource
centres
18 June, LAHQ, London
Why effectiveness now?
FE colleges are probably changing faster than ever before. As senior
mangers wrestle with the problems of increased student numbers and
reduced taught hours, the creation of learning centres becomes an
attractive looking option - but will the result be flexible learning
supported by the library/learning resource centre or large scale student
distraction with technology?
Phase one of the Effective College Library research project* set out to
review evidence about he extent of library support of teaching and
learning in Further Education.
In phase one the research team arrived at five models of effective
college library support of teaching & learning. These models describe:
* Non-convergent resource provision
* Opportunistic intervention
* Strategic intervention
* Promoting resource based learning (two variations - one of which
is fashionable and problematic)
* Skills driven interventions
How will this event help you?
This workshop will introduce these models and pose questions for library
and LRC managers. Our contention is that there are real options for
library managers facing constant change, but that accidentally finding
yourself in a situation is not one of them!
The day will consider the finding of the Effective College Library
project and consider ways forward.
You will:
* Consider how changes in FE teaching & learning are creating
additional demands for support
* Review the findings emerging from phase one of the project about
library support for teaching & support
* Assess how college libraries and learning resource centres can
response to changing demands
Who should attend?
FE and LRC managers, and others interested in effective library support
of teaching & learning in Further Education.
NB This event is a repeat of the workshop designed by Information
Management Associates as part of the University of Sheffield short
course programme.
