I am investigating the phenomenon - common in genre fiction in public
libraries of readers making a mark (often on the inside back cover) to
denote which titles they have read. These are especially common in my
experience in westerns, where cattle-brand-like monograms proliferate.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has any anecdotes - or even
research! - about such marks: their use, their design, their
occurrence in particular types of fiction. Does anyone know if they
are used by readers apart from their author to identify other readers?
If anyone's excited enough to offer photocopies of examples, I'd
happily pay costs and postage.
Any information, however trivial it may seem to you, would be
gratefully received.
Many thanks,
