UCoSDA Course
A Professional Development Workshop - For
Trainers/Developers of HE Support/Allied Staff
19th-21st October, 1998
Chancellors, University of Manchester
Background
A number of previous workshops for trainers/developers of HE
support/allied staff have been organised by
UCoSDA, but the last of these was held in 1995. We have recently been
requested, by a number of colleagues to
arrange a further programme and we are delighted to do so, at what
would appear to be a very opportune time.
UK higher education has gone through a series of changes in the last
few years and is set to face a further period of
instability. In the aftermath of the Dearing report; the proposed
establishment of an Institute for Learning and
Teaching (ILT); UCoSDA being recognised as the NTO for HE; the
possible implications of the pay review
committee; etc the impact for support/allied staff could be
significant. This workshop will address some of these
key issues as well as considering the professional development of
trainers/developers of HE support/allied staff.
Aims
It is intended that the workshop will afford participants the
opportunity to:
• examine and explore some of the key changes and issues affecting
support/allied staff training/development in HE;
•build links, share skills, experiences and knowledge about the
concepts of learning and development and other job
related topics.
Objectives
By the end of the workshop it is anticipated that participants will
have:
• developed their knowledge and understanding of how the recent and
future changes in HE will affect
support/allied staff;
• increased their awareness of how these changes might inpact on the
role of support/allied staff
trainers/developers;
• had an opportunity to reflect on their future personal and
professional development needs;
had the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with their
counterparts in other universities and colleges.
Programme Content
The programme will include both presentations and participative
activities, as well as opportunities for informal
discussions and sharing of training/development materials,
programmes, resources, etc. It will focus on:
• personal and professional development,
• THETO’s role within the HE sector,
• qualification and accreditation structures,
• the changing role of HE support/allied staff,
• initial, work-based, continuing and life-long learning
opportunities,
staff development models.
Target Participants
The workshop is intended for staff trainers/developers who have,
within their remit, a responsibility for support/allied
staff, namely ancillary, clerical, manual, secretarial, technical,
etc, whether they have attended a previous workshop or
not.
