Certainly not an inane query! (re 'no answer was the stern reply'). I
thought it was going to be easy to trace but have had no luck even with the
vast resources of the British Library's reference materials to hand,
printed and electronic. Unfortunately the web quotations site at
http://www.lexmark.com/data/quote.html
seems to have ceased operations, and the others have been no use.
Can anyone identify the following quotation which has also eluded me:
"A prisoner of God / alone here in my cell, / I have no hope of heaven, / I
have no fear of hell"
Also the following, apocryphally attributed to Voltaire: "If you see a
Swiss banker jump out of a first-floor window, make sure to follow him:
there's bound to be money in it".

It might by some people's definition been an inane query but I do hope
someone is going to put me out of my misery soon and tell me did anyone
finally identify where 'no answer was the stern reply' actually came from?
