There are just a few days left for submissions to the AISB99
Symposium on Stories And Humour -- deadline December 21st.

                       Symposium on

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND CREATIVE LANGUAGE: STORIES AND HUMOUR

       at the AISB'99 Convention, 6th-9th April 1999

Edinburgh College of Art & Division of Informatics, University of Edinburgh

                      CALL FOR PAPERS

The AISB'99 Convention will be held in Edinburgh in April 1999. It will
consist of 13 workshops and symposia on a wide range of themes in Artificial
Intelligence and Cognitive Science. An underlying theme of the Convention
this year is the study of creativity, though not all of the events include a
creative element. Further details of AISB'99 will be found at the conference
web site, listed below.

Paper submissions are invited for the Symposium on Artificial Intelligence
and Creative Language: Stories and Humour. Within the area of
``creativity'', there is a growing interest in the uses of language,
particularly the creation or interpretation of stories or humorous texts.
This two-day workshop will primarily explore these areas, although it may be
possible to consider other forms of linguistic creativity such as poetry or
neologisms. Papers are invited which treat these topics from an AI
standpoint, for example formal analyses, descriptions of implemented
systems, or theoretical proposals.

The areas of interest of the Symposium on Artificial Intelligence and
Creative Language: Stories and Humour will include, but are not limited to:

analyses of particular genres of story or humour; descriptions of
particular mechanisms underlying stories or humour; models of the
generation of stories or humorous material; models of the
interpretation of stories or humorous material; empirical studies
of computational models of stories or humour; theoretical
proposals for modelling or describing stories or humour.

It is essential that papers have some formal or computational orientation.
While it is not mandatory to have a working implementation to accompany the
submission, highly informal or literary discussions which have no clear
connection to AI or computation are not suitable.

Papers will be selected by anonymous peer review of extended abstracts of
not more than 4 A4 pages. A cover page should be supplied listing the Title,
and the Author's name and affiliation, but the extended abstract itself
should not identify the author. Deadlines are listed in the timetable,
below.

Programme Co-Chairs: Kim Binsted (Sony CSL, Japan); Graeme Ritchie
(Edinburgh, Scotland).

Programme Committee: Anton Nijholt (Twente, Netherlands); Mike Sharples
(Birmingham, England); Oliviero Stock (IRST, Italy).

Submissions should be sent to the Programme Chair at the following address:
Kim Binsted, Sony Computer Science Laboratory, 3-14-13 Higashi-Gotanda,
Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan 141. Email: [log in to unmask],
phone: +81 3 5448 4380, fax: +81 3 5448 4273.
