Contributions are invited (both oral and poster) for the following special
session (A7 - Crustal evolution in the Palaeoproterozoic) in an
interdisciplinary symposium on Orogeny and Crustal Evolution through Time at
the 1999 European Union of Geosciences meeting in Strasbourg (28th March -
1st April 1999).
Please note that the abstract deadline is 15th November 1998.

The transition from the Archaean world to truly modern tectonics in the
Proterozoic is marked by the first clear indication of linear collison
zones, continent-scale rifting and the earliest true ophiolites.
Application of high-precision geochronology, palaeomagnetism as well as
seismic and geoelectric methods have greatly improved our knowledge of
Palaeoproterozoic geology and given rise to greater confidence in
palaeogeographic reconstructions and plate tectonic syntheses. Against this
background of excellent data, this session will attempt to synthesise and
critically evaluate several important issues including (a) Large-scale
correlation of Palaeoproterozoic orogenic belts - if these are accurate why
are they seemingly insensitive to the tectonic gyrations of the
Neoproterozoic and Phanerozoic?; (b) criteria for the recognition of
collisional suture zones - are ophiolites essential? (c) the relative
importance of arc magmatism vs underplating in continental crustal growth;
and (d) the metallogenetic and resource implications of the Archaean to
Proterozoic transition. Contributions addressing these issues are invited
and will include participants from Europrobe, Copena and related projects.
