Changing the Balance: Women, Men and the tertiary technical educational
experience.

CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

29th - 31st March 1999
Newton Rigg College at University of Central Lancashire
Penrith, Cumbria

Chaired jointly by Pennie Ottley, University of Central Lancashire and
Lynette Willoughby, Leeds Metropolitan University

The aim of the conference is to both disseminate and build upon the
results of the Leonardo da Vinci project, +Curriculum, Women,
Technology+ (CuWaT). It will enable delegates to explore the three
dimensions of change identified as necessary by the CuWaT project if
technology, engineering and computing (TEC) curricula are to provide an
holistic and gender-inclusive education for students. The booklet
produced by the CuWaT project will be made available to all delegates
and presenters before the conference and conference attendees will be
encouraged to build on this framework. The three dimensions identified
as crucial are pedagogy, content of curricula and culture.

This is intended to be a practical conference where delegates are as
active as presenters. There will also be +staff development+ workshops
in each of the three dimensions and each delegate will be able to select
one of these workshops to attend.

Outcomes
Delegates will have the opportunity to explore
· the different ways that women and men learn TEC subjects and to
reflect on how to incorporate these into curriculum development and
delivery.
· what to include in the TEC curriculum and what to exclude
· how to identify the culture of their Department, the impact that this
culture has on students and how to take appropriate steps to change it.
· the importance of staff development using example models

Who should attend
· Practising lecturers in TEC Further and Higher Education Departments.
· Heads of TEC Departments in Further and Higher Education.
· Those responsible for developing and delivering postgraduate teaching
qualifications for TEC staff.
· Personnel responsible for training
· Those interested in equal opportunities issues
· Business organisations who employ TEC graduates.
· Representatives from Professional Bodies

Submissions are invited under the three dimensions.

Example sub-topics are given below. We recognise that these three main
dimensions are highly interrelated. and presenters and delegates are
encouraged to reflect on these interrelationships.

PEDAGOGY· holistic teaching and learning· teaching and learning styles·
diagnosing and addressing styles· distance learning· problem-based
learning· studio-based learning· integration
CULTURE· what do we mean by culture?· strategies for change·
