Melanie may well be right when she says that the BPS standards
are well defined. My point is that having now seen several
diagnostic reports from people with the RSA SpLD qualification I
find they vary considerably in the tests they apply and the
combinations offered. I am numerate enough and have enough
familiarity with basic psychology to be able to fight my way through
the WAIS etc., as provided by ed psychs. I am not confident to
judge if the combination of tests provided from other sources is
necessary and sufficient. As a needs assessor I want to be
confident that a case has been established so that I can then go
on to discuss with the student what the fallout is and how we can
help. Sadly, I have seen cases of such inadequate evidence I have
had to reject them and insist on a further diagnosis. It is this which
is getting harder to judge as we widen the field.
I don't want to impede progress and reject teacher's reports but
equally I don't want to fall into the habit of accepting diagnoses just
because they contain "numbers".
