Dear Rachel,
There are a number of hearing impaired students at the Uni of
Sheffield, some are sign language users.
We have a contract with the Sheffield College Hearing Inpaired
Service (the Sheffield College is the local FE College). This covers
open days, interviews, admissions etc. It also
covers meetings, Departmental training and any other bits and pieces.
The cost of this contract is covered by the University.
With regard to individual students and their course support - after initial
assessment of the student's needs, the support is
provided by the Hearing Impaired Service and paid for via the DSA.
The Hearing Impaired Service provide communication support and
specialist support from trained teaching staff.
The above is just a quick response, please ring me if you need more
details.
regards, Marie

I would be interested to know how sign language support is provided and
paid for in your universities. Does your University provide these services
or do you buy in support using the Disabled Students Allowance?
If you have any courses aimed at deaf students, how is the support
provided for these courses?
If you could spare the time to reply to me by 2pm today it would be really
really helpful!
Rachel
