I have just received a copy of a press release (dated 6 March) from the Social
Security Advisory Committee regarding consultation on the Social Security
Amendment (Students) regulations 1998. The contents may be particularly
relevant to students who need to take time out of their course for disability
or health related reasons.
"The Secretary of State for Social Security has referred to the Social Security
Advisory Committee proposals for regultions which would, following recent Court
of Appeal judgements, confirm the Government's policy intention that social
security benefits are not payable to full-time students until they finally
complete, abandon or are dismissed from courses.
"Before the Committee considers and responds to the proposals it would like to
hear from organisations and individuals who have views on them.
Representations will be welcome from Northern Ireland where the same proposals
would be introduced by separate regulations.
"THose wishing to make recommendations to the Committee may obtain a copy of
the Department's explanatory memorandum and draft regulations from the
Secretary to the Committe at New Court, 48 Carey Street, London WC2A 2LS
Tel 0171 412 1510, Fax 0171 412 1510.
" Those responding should make it clear if they wish their comments to remain
confidential. Otherwise they may be made public in full or summary form.
Responses should arrive no later than FRIDAY 3 APRIL 1998.
