Martin - thanks for your note, which I'm sure is right - it's a bit of an
inflammatory smirk, simply to hack at -one- of D's items and to imagine
this grounds for a general slating. Thought perhaps this tail end comment
might get people chipping in, however. But yes, it was silly. Derrida
has had a mixed welcome in the UK, I think - probably people there are
less impressed on the whole (this has been my own experience, in spending
time at Harvard & Columbia (though admittedly Spivak is at the latter)).
Certainly the 'bigger name' teachers at Cambridge tend to reserve for him,
and for those they take to be his dependent compeers, whatever bile's
raiseable. Me, I'm undecided in fact. Certainly not as sure as either
Ben Watson or Drew Milne, but I'm sure they've both read more than I have.
Robin's hint that Prynne is responsible for propagating this disdain is, I
think, a bit fanciful. He did mention D to me once, and with
wearied, contemptuous impatience, but this was over dinner, I was
drunk, the rtoom was full of squealing undergrads, he was having a
