I agree with much of what Rupert Loydell has to say about marketing &
distribution. Just one note of dissidence though: Password claim to
represent small presses achieving a certain standard of presentation &
planning. I think I can fairly say that Reality Street Editions meets &
exceeds this. Yet we have been repeatedly rebuffed by Password. The first
time we applied to join their list, about 3 or 4 years ago, they raised
several objections based on inaccurate information (that we publish
pamphlets, not spine-bound books, that we don't have blurbs on the back of
our books, that our prices are too high - all of this manifestly untrue).
When we protested, they conceded that we did meet the criteria, but they
just had too many presses on the list, and suggested trying again in a
year's time. A year later we did, and received no reply to the letter or to
a follow-up. At that point (bearing in mind that I heard other presses had
had negative experiences with them), we gave up on them. RSE is still
looking for repping/distribution in the UK - any ideas?
I shall be offline for a week or so, as I am away, but backchannel messages
are gratefully received.
