First call for Rob Mackenzie / Anselm Hollo Tue 20 10 98 at 8 pm Upstairs,
The Three Cups, Sandland Street, London WC1
I am assuming you know the work of Rob MacKenzie and I
don't intend to clog the list with what you don't need. If you are
unfamiliar with Rob, why not trust your preferred poetry provider, and come
along to hear him? He will be introduced by Harry Gilonis who knows his work
well. If not, contact me backchannel and I shall try to persuade you.
Younger potential audience in UK may not be familiar with the name of Anselm
Hollo so here is / are some factual information / reasons why you should be
at the reading.
Anselm Hollo is Finnish, but has spent much of his life abroad, in Germany,
Austria, UK and then for many years in USA. He is currently based in France.
He lived in London for a number of years, years ago, and I have translations
and poems from that period - during which he translated Allen Ginsberg's
Howl into Finnish - and I still read them.
WF recently announced that it will be publishing a new booklet by Hollo on
the night of the reading. The magazine Sub Voicive Poetry 1998 # 18, to be
published on the night, includes a small selection, made by Hollo himself,
of poems from 30+ years.
Hollo has published more than 35 books and chapbooks of poetry,
including West is Left on the Map (Dead Metaphor Press, 1993); Corvus
(Coffee House Press, 1995); AHOE (Erie CO: Smokeproof Press, 1997)
He has translated into English many contemporary Finnish poets, among them
Paavo Haavikko (Selected Poems 1949 - 1988, Carcanet, 1991) and Pentti
Saarikoski (Trilogy: the last three books, Sun & Moon, 1998), as well as
fiction, plays, and poetry from the German, French, Swedish, Russian and
Finnish.
Who knows when or if there may be an opportunity to see Anselm in London
again. His permanent base is Colorado, not exactly convenient. I was very
pleased - excited - to get the opportunity to present AH. I hope that a
substantial proportion of those who can make it will do so to share my
pleasure and welcome both poets.
So here's hoping to see a full room on Tue 20 10 98 at 8 pm Upstairs, The
Three Cups, Sandland Street, London WC1 for MacKenzie and Hollo
L5.00 or L2.50 for the unwaged - includes the magazine
