Upon inquiry into George Bernard Shaw's diet, I received the following
email. Anyone on this list who has knowledge of additional information,
please pass it on to me.
Thanks
"Dear Ernest Slyman,
Your query about Shaw's vegetarian diet was passed on to me. A menu
prepared by Charlotte Shaw for chefs of hotels and ships when the Shaws
were travelling stated: "Mr. Bernard Shaw does not eat MEAT, GAME, FOWL, OR
FISH, or take TEA or COFFEE. Instead he will want one of the under
mentioned dishes at lunch and dinner. He will eat green vegetables,
puddings, pastry, etc., cheese and desert like other people. He likes
oranges and salads and nuts--especially walnuts." Blanch Patch, Shaw's
secretary, included this menu in her 1951 autobiography, Thirty Years with
G.B.S. If you want more information, I would recommend looking at Michael
Holroyd's biography of Shaw or The Collected Letters of Shaw edited by Dan
Laurence."
Regards,
Ann Ferguson
