I found Bill's post regarding the sales of the Mottrram PR in the 70s
very useful - above all as a historical correction. I have to point out
however that total sales in pounds, shillings and pence (and later in
pounds and (new) pence) does not equate to total sales by volume. For
that we'd need an indication of the average cover price in each of the
years quoted - which I suspect would translate into a decline in sales
in the later years (not a dramatic decline, I agree) on the back of the
inflation-adjusted cover price. This would not be be Andrew's
1500-to-300 shift, but I'm sure it would nonetheless be a decline.
The best defense against incorrect attacks is to marshall ALL the
evidence and present it clearly ...
