The mask is an ancient symbol of transformation.
I don't see why it's not possible to see the "I" itself as a mask, and
language itself as a method of attaining impersonality. To put something
into language is an immediate objectification. To put something into
poetic or formal langauge a more conscious method of doing so.
Maybe I've missed something - scanning today because I'm in a hurry - but
I haven't seen any mention of Fernand Pessoa, chief generator of poetic
others.
