Pete,
sorry about that. I wrote a response to Berryman's Dream Songs
and it went into the abyss. It went something like this:
I have a tape of Berryman reading a large selection
of the Dream Songs to a University crowd. Like you, I find
some of the Songs to be quite flat - on the page.
But to hear John Berryman in full flight is awesome.
He says, before the reading: "I'm going to read for some time.
In fact, I'm going to read just as many as I can. Good luck,
Ladies and Gentlemen". Then he's off, with his edgy,
passionate voice, throwing asides and anecdotes around:
"Some people think this one is sad, it makes them cry.
Saul Bellow thinks it's crazy. And I admit that it is.
We kill ourselves laughing about it..." It brings those Songs
I'd forgotten back to life.
Anyway, parm me Pete, orright?
best,
Anthony
