Ira: had an interesting experience on my first fairly casual read of
"2000". Generally I read first for sound & music, yet I convinced
myself "it made sense" too, ie "I'll look at that again soon & figure it
out" (find I cannot suppress, although can sometimes suspend for a
while, the desire/need to find/make meaning). Am curious if this was an
idiosyncratic respone or shared by anyone else: if the latter my
thinking is that the familiarity of the metre & a dignity/authority
associated with it, created the illusion.
Thanks for the post: I assume you made the selection of the feet as
opposed to having a computer program do the selection.
Best to you, Pete.
ps a corollary might be that the unfamiliar (eg in syntax, rhythmic &
perceptual speed, sparse use of conventional poetic techniques) in eg
Prynne, Wilkinson, creates the sense of meaninglessness some find there.
This is hardly a critical breakthrough, but perhaps it will stimulate
someone to say it better & more thoroughly.
