KEEP THE BRITISH LIBRARY FREE!

4th October 1998

Dear Friend

The Campaign is pleased to let you know that the Board of the British
Library has dropped any plans to introduce charges for access to the
Reading Rooms. The Board s press statement pointed to the passionate
nature of readers opposition to the proposals as the reason for
deciding that access to the Library s reading rooms will remain free
for the foreseeable future .

Obviously, this decision is a great victory for our campaign, and is a
tribute to our hard work and our dedication to the principle of free and
equal access to literature, science, art, etc. We thank everyone who has
helped with the campaigning because without these efforts there is no
doubt we would be facing a very real threat to our principles and
values.

Obviously, there is no longer any need for the rally of October 14th.
And the campaign has fulfilled its primary objective. However, the
Library Board is still pointing to its financial problems, and is
suggesting that a reduction of opening hours would be a way of dealing

with these difficulties. A group of us is hoping to meet Brian Lang, the
Chief Executive, to find out more about these measures, and the Library
has said it will be issuing the final details of its review within a
month. Thus, the Campaign feels that it is necessary to remain vigilant,
and that we should be ready to renew our opposition should the occasion
arise. Any further information that we have, we will post on our web-
site [http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Aegean/8435/Library.html].

However, for now, once again thank you for your support.

Best Wishes,

Ian Wollington.
