Right Ernest,
I interviewed Ginsberg in '91 and we talked extensively about
Jesse Helms et all in the US, the crusades of the moral majority
and so forth. What was most salutary were his tales of 'Howl' and
others of his works, being 'chilled' from the radio air by
draconian legislation that threatened college stations with
closure.
So, 30 odd years after 'winning' censorship battles, the tides were
being reversed. As Alaric intimated, battles fought are not 'won'
in perpetuity. Often, they must be rematched by each new generation.
Depressing isn't it. That goes for the aesthetically, the politically,
culturally, socially contestable territories. Memories tend to be both
inaccurate and short.
