Apologies for cross-posting.
I am involved in a group which is considering the development of joint honours
degrees at Napier University. I would be grateful for any shared experience
prompted by any or all of the following questions:
1. If your institution offers joint honours degrees, what degree of student
choice do you allow? Can the student choose the proportion of each discipline
that they wish to study ie 50/50 or 70/30 etc? Within each discipline can they
choose completely freely from a range of subjects or are there academic
constraints?
2. If there is great flexibility, how are the degrees that you award named? Is
it simply "Joint Honours in A&B" no matter the particular subjects or
proportion within each discipline that the student chooses or are the name and
conjunctions used more a function of the student's choice?
3. Does your institution allow applications to a faculty or school rather than
a named programme of study? If so, has this policy proved to be popular with
applicants? Has it given rise to any problems that were previously unforeseen?
4. How does your institution integrate external examiners into your Joint
Honours system? At what stage in the process do your external examiners make
their contribution? Do they attend several boards on one day or is there a
special combined board that meets on one day? Does your system pose you any
logistical problems?
If you prefer to, please reply to me directly on <[log in to unmask]>
Thank you for any help that you can give.
