Many thanks for the responses received on the subject of whether or
not Sabbatical Officers who are required to register as students but
who have completed their programme of study are eligible for Council
Tax Exemption.
As the responses were varied, I contacted our own Council Tax Office
to agree the position with them. We both concurred that as the above
situation means that they are not students within the Council Tax
definitions (i.e. enrolled on a programme of study on a full-time
basis), they couldn't claim exemption. This is despite any
requirement to register as students for a University's
technical/regulatory requirements.
Because the sabbatical officers receive a relatively low
renumeration, they may be eligible to claim rent allowance and
Council Tax benefit by applying to the benefits office. In passing
this info on to the sabbatical officers here, I was advised to
emphasise that the benefit claim should be on the basis of low
renumeration not student status.
I hope the above is useful in the event of any further queries on the
subject!
Thanks once again,
Rachael.
