Founders, Smiths and Platers
An International Conference on Metal Forming and Finishing
from the Earliest Times
St. Catherine's College,
Oxford, UK
20th-24th September, 1999
In September 1999 the Materials Science-Based Archaeology
Group in the Department of Materials, University of Oxford
will celebrate 20 years of work. We will mark the occasion
by holding a conference which will be devoted to metal
forming and finishing from the earliest times, and which
will reflect the underlying physical and mechanical
metallurgy. Within this framework we are inviting papers
and posters on the whole spectrum of metals and processes.
The sessions will be grouped by material - non-ferrous, ferrous and precious - with special sessions on alloy properties and microstructure, and on experimental metallurgy.
The exact timetable for the conference will depend on the
papers you submit but the general pattern will be:
Monday 20th September
Afternoon: Arrival and registration;
Evening lecture on "A modern sculpture foundry"
(Speaker to be announced)
Tuesday 21st September,
Morning and afternoon:
Non-ferrous metals, including tin, lead, pewter
etc. casting, working, plating and decoration.
Wednesday 22nd September,
Morning: Precious metals, including coin production
Afternoon: Physical metallurgy and mechanical
properties of alloys.
Evening lecture on "Making and firing a replica of
a wrought iron gun from the "Mary Rose", R. Smith,
The Royal Armouries
Thursday 23rd September,
Morning and afternoon:
Iron and steel, working, finishing, and decoration;
including cast iron
Evening: Conference Dinner
Friday 24th September, am:
Morning: Experimental metallurgy
Afternoon:: Departure
We hope the dinner will be attended by the four Heads of
Department under whom we have worked and who have greatly
encouraged our research.
