CRC PAEDIATRIC AND FAMILIAL CANCER RESEARCH GROUP
RESEARCH STATISTICIAN
BACKGROUND
The Paediatric and Familial Cancer Research Group is funded by the Cancer
Research Campaign and is concerned with research into the causes of cancer
in children.
Current work in progress includes participation in a national
epidemiological study of all childhood cancers and various projects
addressing specific hypotheses, in particular diagnostic groups. One
important aspect of the work is to elucidate the role of genetic
predisposition in childhood cancer and to identify associations with
inherited syndromes and with specific cancers in adults. The work is
largely based on collection of information by interviews with families and
from medical records. Biological samples are also collected for analysis in
laborities, generally at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, The
Christie and Saint Mary's Hospitals in Manchester.All the information is
colleted and subjected to statistical analysis.
JOB DESCRIPTION
1. Carry out statistical analyses of descriptive epidemiological data
including incidence and survival analyses.
2. Carry out analyses of analytical epidemiological data including cohort
studies, case-control studies and modelling familial cancer risks.
3. Carry out other statistical analyses relevant to the research programme.
4. Prepare and assist with preparation of papers for publication.
5. Assist with the support and development of the computer system within
the department.
6. Assist with the support and development of departmental computer databases.
7. Provide computer support and training to other members of the group.
8. Other tasks as requested by and folowing discussion with Dr McNally and
Dr Birch.
9. The Research Statistician will be responsible on a day to day basis to
the Deputy Director, Dr McNally, but overall responsibility will rest with
the director, Dr Birch.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Applicants should be graduates with a degree in statistics or other
relevant subject which included a high statistical content. Some
postgraduate research or work experience in biostatistics, medical
statistics, epidemiology or related area and/or a higher degree in a
relevant subject is desirable but not essential. Statistical packages in
use in the department include SPSS, GLIM and EPILOG, database packages
include Dataease and Paradox, graphics packages include Harvard Graphics
and Kindred, word processing packages include Wordstar and Wordperfect.
Experience with at least some of these packages would be a great advantage.
The departmental computer system consists of a network of IBM PC's and
clones running Novell Netware version 3.12 and DOS versions 5 and 6.
Expertise in this type of system is desirable. The successful applicant
would be expected to have expertise in general statistical methods. Some
experience in the analysis of epidemiological data and knowledge and
experience of relevant methodology [case-control and cohort analyses,
survival analyses, data modelling] would also be desirable.
DETAILS OF APPOINTMENT
The successful applicant will be appointed at research associate level in
the University of Manchester Department of Child Health. Salary will be
paid according to the University Research and Analagous scale 1A. The post
is funded from a Cancer Research Campaign programme grant and is available
immediately. The appointment wiil be for a fixed term to 30TH Septmber 1999
when the programme funding will be subject to review.
The post is based at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, but some
travel between Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, the University and
other local hospitals may be necessary.
